In this thoughtful weekday homily, Deacon Pat Hessel reflects on Jesus’ words in John 6—“I am the Bread of Life”—to draw out two essential dimensions of Christian discipleship: belief in Christ, and participation in the Eucharist. Drawing on a personal story about his 97-year-old mother receiving communion at the Shrine of Our Lady of Champion, he challenges us to renew our reverence for the sacrament we so often take for granted. This homily, rooted in the Memorial of St. François de Laval, also reminds us that the Christian mission isn’t simply to believe, but to feed others: with faith, witness, and the Body of Christ. When we receive the Eucharist with awe and gratitude, we become more like the One we receive.
